The deadline to file your Form 2290 is on the last day of the month following the First Used Month (FUM) of
your vehicle.
The FUM of your vehicle is considered the first month your vehicle is operated on the public highway during the
tax year.
For example, if you use your vehicle for the first time in 2022-2023 during September 2022, the due date to file your 2290 form will be October 31, 2022.
If the deadline falls on a weekend or a legal holiday, the next business day will be considered
the deadline.

Generally, most truckers use their trucks during July and will renew their Form 2290 at this time. Hence, July will be the first used month and August 31 will be the deadline for
most truckers.
2. What happens if I do not file Form 2290 within
the deadline?
If you do not file Form 2290 and pay the required HVUT within the filing deadline, you will be subjected to penalties by the IRS. If you miss filing your IRS Form 2290 within the deadline, there will be a penalty equal to 4.5% of the total tax amount due and it will increase every month for up to five months.
If you miss making the HVUT payment, there will be a penalty of 0.5% of the total tax amount due as a penalty and an additional interest of 0.54%
each month.
